Five Ways to Celebrate Valentine's Day When You Have Young Kids

I’ve asked a lot of people over the last couple of weeks, how they’re planning to celebrate Valentine’s Day this year. Because of the stage of life that we’re in, a lot of those were couples with young kids. Most people said that they were going to celebrate as a family, while others weren’t planning on celebrating at all. In the years before we had kids, we went on overnight getaways, turned our apartment into a romantic bed & breakfast, or went out for a fancy meal. We don’t really have a set tradition, but this year I decided that I wanted to start one and find a way to celebrate the holiday that will last for years to come. I hope that this post will inspire you if you have young kids, so that you can expand your celebration to include time for just the two of you each year!

By pulling out some nicer dishes and adding a few touches from the dollar store, we are able to create the perfect atmosphere for date night at home.

At Home Dates are Date Nights Too

When I talk to other couples about date night, something that I hear often is, “We haven’t been on a date in a while” followed by “With our schedules/kids/budget/etc. it just hasn’t been possible to get out of the house together.” I often have to keep myself calm during those interactions because I tend to want to turn Leslie Knope and excitedly yell that they don’t have to leave the house to make date night happen! Date night isn’t defined as time outside your house together, it’s any intentional time that you spend doing something outside of your normal routine together, with the goal of having fun and reconnecting as a couple.

Christmas Lights Drive - Holiday Date Idea

The first Christmas that we were married, I had a fun and low key idea for a date night tradition that I hoped we would continue for years to come. Rather than walking around somewhere to look at a Christmas lights display, I thought it would more enjoyable to drive around one night and see as many different lights as possible. That first year, we stopped to grab a cup of hot chocolate and drove up into some of the wealthier neighborhoods on the mountain, listening to Christmas music while we looked at their lights. We had such a good time that we’ve made that drive every year since.

Christmas Cookie Decorating Date Night + The Best Sugar Cookie Recipe

Rather than having my own sugar cookie decorating party to get gifts ready for neighbors and our contribution ready for parties, I invite Joe to join me and we make a date of it. Some times he helps me frost, but most times he’s the taste tester every step of the way. We turn on Christmas music or bring the small TV up and watch a Christmas movie while we decorate. Sometimes we’ll get all of the decorating done while the kids are decorating their cookies at the kitchen table, but a lot of times I opt to wait until they have gone to bed or are taking their naps.
