Valentine Date Nights (Plural) All Week Long

Our Valentine date this year was in multiple parts, it pretty much lasted all week. I decided that I'd be in charge of planning it, since last year Joe took me to the Spaghetti Factory. While we were there he tortured me by telling me that he had something for me but wasn't sure if I'd get it that night, and I assumed it was my engagement ring that I wanted so badly! We watched Knight and Day and cuddled and then he brought out this lovely beauty, the engagement ring of all engagement rings, and wouldn't you believe, it's edible!!

Anyway, I figure it's only fair that we switch off on the big celebrations like New Years, Valentines, and our anniversary. It wouldn't be nice of me if I made him plan them every time.

For family home evening the day before Valentines, I picked a fun activity from our book where we had to write persuasive valentine cards to each other. We had to write a note to each other trying to convince each other to be each other's valentine. It was pretty fun, and Joe had some entertaining arguments. The card starts, "Be my valentine because..." and my three favorite reasons he wrote were, "I let you cook food for me." "I eat the food that you cook." and "You have sexy hair." I love how he makes it sound like he hates my cooking hahaha and I'm supposed to be his valentine because I have sexy hair?! I'm not sure how that was supposed to influence my decision, but I love him, so I'll keep him!

Joe drew a tree with a heart underneath

Since the actual holiday fell on a Tuesday and our lives are busy with work and homework, I kept it simple, but I still had to have fun!  I wrote on our bathroom mirror with a pink dry erase marker and put a cute card with an itunes gift card in Joe's lunch box, that was kind of fun! During the day Joe and I were texting about my notes I left him and I said, "I'm so cute huh!?" His response was, "Oh yes....I think I will marry you because of it." When he came home from work, he said that he had a present for me to use by myself, with him, with a friend, but not with another guy, or maybe when I'm cravin' some appetizers. He pulled out an Applebee's gift card and it made me smile because he remembered that sometimes I get an intense craving for the spinach artichoke dip that they have there and I'll do carside to go, just for that! We went to dinner at Sizzler because our love is sizzlin', it's one of Joe's favorite places to eat, (cheap steak dinner anyone?!) and we had a couple of gift certificates because the last time we went, the waitress accidentally dumped a coke or something in my lap and felt bad. The original plan was to get dessert at Smoochies Smoothies, but by the time Joe got home from work, I knew that we'd be done with dinner too late to head over there so we ordered the dessert bar at Sizzler for after our meal. Ice cream with crushed oreos anyone?

I thought my gift to Joe was pretty lame next to his gift to me, but that's ok. I had the hardest time thinking of anything this year, so one day while I was grocery shopping, I went down the seasonal aisles at Target and found chocolate golf balls, a big Reese's heart, an Itunes gift card, and the perfect greeting card. The next week I had the brilliant, or maybe not so brilliant idea to get him a nerf gun with some extra amo. I was hoping that because I got the suction darts, he'd shoot it at things that it can stick to rather than shooting them at me. I was wrong about that though. I should have bought me one to fight back, he keeps telling me that, so I guess I'll be getting one of my own soon. We found a three pack of movies he wanted at Costco and got him that as part of his present too.

I gave Joe his present a week early because 1- I have a hard time waiting, 2- it was so lame, and 3- we'd just gone to get my gift ordered and it wasn't going to be done until the end of the month so we wouldn't be exchanging gifts on Valentines. (I did keep the Itunes gift card and greeting card to give him on the actual day.) Joe's first task that he accomplished with the Nerf gun was to shoot down the mistletoe that I keep forgetting to take down.

It took a couple of shots, but it came down quite nicely. Now we'll only have to take the nail down. Joe is a much better aim than me, he hit everything he shot at and I umm...didn't..... I think he's a little too excited about this gun but I guess that's good since I was convinced my gift was so lame.

Joe's gift to me was what I was going to get him for our anniversary so I was kind of annoyed when he told me what his plan was (he needed my help with the picture) because that meant I had to come up with something different and just as great for our anniversary. Rats!!! At least I have a few months to think about it. Anyway, ever since we got engaged, I think, Joe's been telling me that his mission president had framed his certificate of sealing and had it hanging in his house. Joe wanted to take this to the next level and get ours matted with a picture of us in front of the temple on our wedding day and hang it in our house. I'm not quite sure where I'm going to put it yet, but I'll figure that out soon! When I get it back from the framing gallery in a week or so, I'll post a picture of it because it is going to be really cool!

The thing that I'm most proud of didn't come until Friday! I'd been so antsy to do this ever since I planned it at the end of January, it was killing me! I've been doing this project, and it's been a lot of fun! It's 21 days of simple projects to show your husband more love. It's written by a Christian lady and seems to be geared more toward women who've been married a long time and have kids and that type of thing, but I don't think that only those women can benefit from letting their husband know they are loved, right?! Ok, so 21 days of projects, and they all are really simple. After reading through the book, I went over it again on a Sunday during Joe's 2 hour nap and wrote down my plan for each project. One of the last projects was something to do with creating your own bed and breakfast for the night. This sounded really fun to me and the project fell on a day at the end of Valentines week so it turned into my big date idea!

On Friday after work and grocery shopping and everything, I got started. I made sure our house was clean, took out all of the trash and turned on my candle warmer so that it would smell yummy!

For our dinner, I went to Kneader's and got us sandwiches and chips and chocolate covered strawberries. A bed and breakfast just screams comfort food to me, and what food fits that better? Plus, I didn't want to have to make anything or do clean up for this date, because I'm pretty sure they don't make you do that when you're a guest at a bed and breakfast and I wanted to just enjoy our night. Then I set up our kitchen table in a candlelight dinner type setting, it was kind of fun.

I even made a fun sign for our apartment/bed and breakfast door. I didn't leave it up for long and Joe brought it in when he got home, we didn't want people to think we were crazy!.There was a sign for our room too, because it's red. Joe asked me this morning why it was called the red room, I thought that was kind of obvious, but I guess I was wrong.

When Joe got home, the first thing we did was turn off our cell phones. It was suggested in the book so that you get good quality, uninterrupted time together. It felt like we were on our honeymoon again, just hanging out and enjoying each other's company with nobody to bother us or steal our attention. Dinner was yummy and so was our dessert.

Joe was really sad that I made him take a picture before I let him eat it.

After dinner, we watched Captain America because Joe's been saying a lot lately that he wanted to see it.

That wasn't the end of it though! Breakfast in bed is a must!!! I made it a point to get up early and make Croissant French Toast for Joe before we both had to get ready to go to work for the day.

It probably would have been fun to go away somewhere, but I really liked planning this and putting it into action! I felt really creative too, even though the whole thing was pretty much laid out for me in the book.

I had a lot of fun with all of the things that I kept coming up with throughout the week and I'm probably causing trouble for myself by setting the bar way too high our first year together, but I don't mind! It just challenges me to make things bigger or better in the years to come!

How do you celebrate Valentine's Day romantically and cheap?
