A Valentine Excursion

Husband and I planned a little Valentine getaway this year. We wanted to do something fun and a little different this year, since last year we just stayed in. We also decided to celebrate early so that we could take advantage of our day off, and spend a little extra time together! It was a lot of fun and I really enjoyed spending so much time with my husband!

Our date started on Tuesday night after work. Joe got off earlier than usual so that we could spend that much more time with each other. He was thinking about The Spaghetti Factory for dinner, (we went their our first Valentines day together), but that sadly didn't sound good to either of us because we'd just had pasta the night before, so we chose Texas Roadhouse instead. I was worried that going to eat during the normal dinner rush, which we never get to do, would mean that we'd have a really long wait. Lucky for us, with call ahead seating, we managed to walk in and be seated right away. Dinner was delicious, and it was nice to eat together at a normal hour for once!

After dinner, we headed to Salt Lake where we had reservations at Parrish Place B&B for the night.

This buffalo/bison cracked me up!

We had planned to pop in a movie, enjoy some snacks and just relax for the night, but the input button on our TV didn't work, so we ended up watching normal late night TV instead. It was really nice to spend time together without any distracting projects or homework like I'd probably be occupied with if we were spending time at home.

Joe hates taking pictures, can you tell?

Now he's super excited to take a picture.

I was so excited to sleep in the next morning but wouldn't you know, I woke up at 6:30 instead. Why does that happen? I can never wake up at that time when I need to and the times that I want to sleep in, I can't. I spent the next two hours wasting the fully charged battery on my phone trying to keep myself entertained until husband woke up.

The B&B brought breakfast to our door that morning, and even though it wasn't hot or extravagant, it was still really delicious. They had so many healthy options all packed into a cute basket for us!

Seriously, yummy!!!

I told Joe a few weeks ago that we should go and see the new movie, Warm Bodies [Blu-ray] for Valentines Day.  I was feeling a little guilty that he had to suffer through Les Miserables a few weeks before (he really disliked that show) and I knew this was a movie that he would enjoy. I wasn't sure what to expect from a romantic comedy Zombie movie, so I was a little hesitant going in, but it ended up being really good. Husband thought it was really funny, I thought it was kind of cute, so it was a win for both of us!

And then, it was time for my Valentine present!!! So, let me explain this present to you. Thinking of a gift to get me was really stressing Joe out this year for some reason, so on our drive to the B&B on Tuesday night, he told me that he had an idea but that it might be a lame idea and he wasn't sure if I would like it. His idea was that on Wednesday while we were out and about, I would get to pick something for myself that I wouldn't have normally just gone and bought, but that I really wanted. I was perfectly ok with that idea, and sometime Tuesday night while we were watching TV, I made the decision that I wanted a fish! I have wanted a fish for a while, I don't know why I'm so obsessed with having fish as pets, and Joe always told me no when I've asked to get one, but this time he said yes!

Before we went to our movie on Wednesday, we stopped by Petsmart to look at all of the fish so that I could get some ideas and have the whole movie to think and decide what I really wanted. I was torn between getting two shimmery fancy goldfish or two purple/blue beta fish. After reading the brochure on both types of fish, I made my decision. I learned that if I got the fancy goldfish and a decent size tank to put them in and took good care of them, they could grow to be as big as 10" long and live up to 30 years. I was sold! The goldfish were more exciting and shimmered more than the beta fish anyway. We went into this thinking, 'A 13 cent goldfish, a decent sized bowl, some rocks, a plant and some food.' Pretty cheap present right? Wrong! We left the store with a 20 gallon tank, my two fancy gold fish, the food, 15 pounds of gravel, a little plant and the water conditioner and then later in the week I went back for a water aerator and an algae eater. I may have gone a little overboard, but husband was ok with it, even after I suggested getting a smaller tank for the first year or so and then splurging on the bigger one later when the fish were growing. He wanted to go big or go home!

Goldfish

We are now the proud owners of two pretty fishies named Ron (orange) and Hermione (white). I'm kind of in love with them. The morning after we got them, I did my makeup at the kitchen table by their tank just so that I could watch them swim and fight each other over the little food flakes that were falling from the top of the tank. Sometime in the next few weeks, I want to get some more fake plants and a little decoration for their tank so that it's not so empty. I'm excited to see how big I can get my fish to be and how long I can help them to live!

I should probably tell you about Joe's gift from me too.  I was really excited about it! A few months ago, I saw a post on Life Design and the Pursuit of Craftiness for a really fun Date of the Month Club kit that she makes and you could give to your spouse as a present. I think the original post that I saw was for Christmas, and I already had that figured out, but I really liked the idea. Then a few weeks into the year, she posted it again as a Valentine gift idea and I went for it! I am a huge fan of this gift because it is simple, personal and it lasts all year long.

Date Night Box

His present is a box filled with a list of date ideas that I got from other blogs or came up with on my own, a blank card for husband to pick a date from my list for each month, some tickets that are coupons for different things, two fun vacation vouchers, and a bunch of Hershey's kisses that can be redeemed for real ones. I thought the kiss swapping idea was awesome, he'd get some love and I'd get some chocolate, except husband keeps eating the kisses on his own. ;) Joe has already filled out his dates that I'm going to plan each month and they are all something different than our usual fall back dinner and a Redbox movie date nights. We're going to have a fondue night, go star gazing, go to movies in the park, etc. It's going to be a fun year, I'm sure of it!
